SUNSET SOIREE surged to her second straight city win thanks to a patient ride by Angela Jones.
After scoring at Eagle Farm in mid-October, the mare went back-to-back for the first time in her career with a dominant display over the track and trip on Melbourne Cup Day.
The daughter of Deep Field has thrived since trainer Tony Gollan applied winkers, and the headgear saw her settle beautifully under Jones as the tearaway leader set a hot pace.
SUNSET SOIREE gradually reeled in her stablemate and swiftly put a margin on the rest of the field to score by more than three lengths and go past $130,000 in prizemoney.
“She was in a different class today,” said Gollan.
“She came out of a strong form race and looked very well place here. She got a beautiful run through and showed great tenacity to shoulder her way out in the straight.
“She just loves the 1800 metres as a daughter of Deep Field, and Ange rode a great race on her. She’s making the most of her opportunities, and she deserves it because she’s a hard worker.”
