SUNSET SOIREE SURGES HOME

Updated: Oct 22, 2023

SUNSET SOIREE surged back to form to score her first Saturday metro win at Eagle Farm.

The mare had settled too far back in the run at each of her last two starts, but was much more prominent in Saturday’s Class 3 Plate (1815m) under new jockey Ben Thompson.

Thompson tucked the Deep Field mare away on the fence for much of the contest, before peeling her out and stoking her up at the 800-metre mark.

SUNSET SOIREE still had plenty left to do, but she was gallant to the line to register her fourth career win by a neck.

Trainer Tony Gollan was delighted with the return to winning ways, and believes the change of headgear and tactics may have sparked her up.

“I’m still learning about this horse,” Gollan admitted post-race.

“We put a set of winkers on her, she was great in them and she travelled much closer today. I was a touch worried the Sydney horse was going to kick back and roll her, but she was really tough.

“It’s great to get a win with a big syndicate of owners, I’m sure they’ll have a party tonight! When we got her as a yearling, I never imagined she would be winning over 1800 metres but here we are.”

Victory took her career earnings past $100,000, many congratulations to our partners: Mr A G Stark, Mrs J M Twomey, Mr M J Davidson, Mr R M Harvey, Mr P S Eaton, Mr C Wood, Shandy Hills Racing, Philp Racing, Mr D Condon, Mr J D Rowe, Mr B Anasta, Ms K McGain, Mr L A Hamblion, Mr N W Weston, Mr P Carr, Mr T Choi, Ms S Kemister, Showtime and Yappy Daze.
