Trainer Tony Gollan has identified the Class 3 Plate (1050m) at Doomben on Saturday week for VAPORIZING’s next assignment after he returned with a very encouraging performance at the same track last weekend.
A slashing finish in the Benchmark 72 Handicap saw VAPORIZING pick up all bar the winner, as the now 6YO picked up where he left last prep with the sixth runner-up finish of his career.
VAPORIZING’s get-back style means he relies on a bit of luck in transit to get his head in front, and on this occasion the leader had put a gap on the field before our boy got clear racing room.
But when he did get out, VAPORIZING charged home under Ryan Maloney to collect a cheque for $14,350, which carried his earnings past $120,000.
“That was a really good first-up run,” said Gollan.
“It was just unfortunate that he couldn’t get on the back of the right horses at the right time, which meant he had to do all the work himself and made it awfully tricky for us.
“It’s very hard to sustain that sort of run on your own, and the winner was off and gone so there was no catching him at that point. I thought his run was excellent, that trip at Doomben is spot on for him so if he could have drawn a better barrier, he would’ve got a much kinder run.
“He’s come through the run really well and was as bright as anything the morning after, you wouldn't have known he’d even had a race. The Class 3 Plate at Doomben would be a great option for him second up. I think we’ll stick to the shorter trips for now and keep him on the fresh side.”
We’ll bring you a full preview of VAPORIZING’s second-up run in next week’s edition.
