GENETIC FREAK made an excellent first impression after he won on his debut in the Strong Bloodstock colours at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
The impressive victory on his new home track marked our first success with trainer Adam Campton and also extended our recent hot streak, which now reads two wins and three minor placings from our last six starters.
GENETIC FREAK was a recent acquisition through the Inglis Online Sale, and the $42,500 appears money very well spent after his dynamic display in the Benchmark 65 Handicap (1200m).
Despite having won over 1800m and 2000m for his former connections, the 4YO still proved too sharp for his rivals over an unsuitably short trip.
The son of Shalaa was given a very patient ride by Paul Hammersley, who bided his time before pressing the button in the home straight. The pair gradually reeled in the long-time leader and struck the front in the shadows of the post to claim a cheque for $15,600.
“I know it was only a race at the Gold Coast, but it’s not easy to win anywhere these days and I thought it was a super effort over 1200 metres,” said Campton, who celebrated a winning treble.
“Paul has done a lot of work on this horse, and I thought it was a super ride by him. I’m not usually a fan of keeping the blinkers on first time, but I just thought it would sharpen him up and it’s paid dividends.
“He looks a great purchase and I think we’re going to have a lot of fun with him. He ate all his food overnight and has pulled up great. He’ll have an easy few days now, then we’ll get him back to the races in a couple of weeks’ time when there will be plenty of options for him.”
