GLOBAL CITIZEN made light work of a 12-month absence from the races with a triumphant return to action at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
The son of I Am Invincible hadn’t tasted competitive action since 19 December last year, but showed he had lost none of his explosive speed when he powered away to win the Benchmark 70 Handicap under Jag Guthmann-Chester.
GLOBAL CITIZEN is now two from two over 900m on his home track, and has only missed out on the placings once in seven career starts.
Having suffered some minor setbacks over the past year, the stable and owners have shown plenty of patience with the 5YO but it was rewarded in spades with a fourth career win.
After jumping cleanly, GLOBAL CITIZEN led from the front and showed his rivals a clean pair of heels in the home straight to take his prizemoney to $65,600.
“The only negative from the run is that he lost a front shoe during the race, so we gave him some anti-inflammatories which should hopefully help,” said Trent Edmonds.
“Other than that it was the perfect return to action, Jag rode him well and cuddled him into the straight and from there it was going to take a good one to run him down.
“So it was a great comeback after 50 weeks away. We’d like to keep his races spaced out, and we’ll look to keep him to those short, sharp trips for now. Given the way he came back, we’d have to be very confident that he can keep winning in the right grade.”
Congratulations to our partners on the comeback win.
