BEFANA put in a bold performance with a fast-finishing second at Doomben on Saturday in the $75,000 Fillies and Mares No Metro Wins Handicap.
After being tucked away with cover until the straight, hoop Andrew Mallyon was only just able to squeeze her between two rivals 200m out, as our girl to stormed home with her trademark speed to finish half a length behind the winner.
Trainer Lindsay Hatch didn’t feel the step up in distance to the 1200m was an issue with our brave mare receiving a big tick of approval.
“I thought she was a bit unlucky. She’s flying the mare…I’m very proud of her and very happy with the way she’s pulled up," said Hatch.
“She’s really come back in terrific order. The 1200 is not a problem I feel, I think she’ll get out to further than 1200m but we won’t go there yet I don’t think, we’ll just concentrate on trying to win that metropolitan race with her."
Rewardingly for our partners, Saturday's $14,350 collect boosted BEFANA’s career prizemoney up over the $100,000 mark.
As to where to from here? We know she thrives on having three weeks between runs and there’s a couple of options for our girl. A QTIS Class 3 over 1200m or the Military Rose over 1110m are both potentials, and as Hatch says “we’re extremely happy with her and she’s close to winning”.
We can’t wait!
